Attaching a 4" sleeve to a quilt for hanging:

Cut strip of fabric to be used for sleeve 9" wide and as long as the width of the quilt back (seam strips together as required). Turn the short sides under for 1/2" hems and sew the long sides, right sides together with 1/4" seam.

Turn the sleeve right sides. Press flat with seam centered on one of the flat sides. If desired, you can press a small tuck in the flat side that will be on the side away from the quilt to allow for ease over hanging bar.

Pin the sleeve to the quilt back with the seam facing the quilt back. The top edge of the sleeve should be just below the binding of the quilt (unless your quilt is longer then 96"). If quilt is longer then 96", place the sleeve 96" up from the bottom.

Stitch the upper and lower edges of the sleeve to the quilt using a blind stitch or running stitch. If you wish, you can adjust the stitched down area to be more narrow (about 1/2") than the unstitched side to allow for some slack in the sleeve for the handing pole. For large or heavy quilts, you may want to use two rows of stitching.
