We received a generous donation of fabric from a
gentleman in Beaumont. From this fabric we have put together many kits
which our members take, complete the tops and bring them back to us for quilting
and binding. We have a box of those tops ready for us to find backs and
borders to complete. I took a box of these kits to Rosemary Hanicak in San
Antonio; she and her sisters put these together and present them to the Brooks
Medical Center in San Antonio, which is a center for the severely injured
soldiers returning from our war zones.
We either donated or sold 77 quilts this year and I have 15 more completed
quilts ready for donation. We wait for someone going to San Antonio to
send more quilts to Rosemary. She then washes the quilts, makes cards for
them and they are presented to the soldiers. They must be washed as a
germ-free environment is necessary because of the wounds of the soldiers.
In 2008 we distributed quilts as follows:
38 - Brooks Medical Center
18 - Some Other Place
8 - Casa
2 - Gifted to Quilt Show helpers
11 - Sold for $729
Since we use the Nederland Library at no charge, we felt that a cash donation of
$100 the thing to do for them to use as they deemed necessary.
We made a cash donation to Some Other Place in the amount of $300. This
donation was made in the name of the Golden Triangle Quilt Guild and is just
another means of our charitable work in the community.
We continue to meet most Tuesdays at the Nederland Library at 10:00 am until
about 3:00 pm. We also pin quilts for quilting for a $10 fee. The
money that we collect from this and the money we kept back from the sale of
quilts goes to buy our thread, blades, pins, rulers, etc.
BOYS HAVEN REPORT - 2008
This year a total of 25 boys received new quilts. Dates of our visits
were February 16th, April 3rd, October 3rd and December 2nd.
On February 16th a workshop was held and several members participated.
The boys had expressed an interest in learning how to make quilts. They
made several for the Quilts of Valor program. Members then finished them
and on April 3rd we took pictures of the boys with the finished quilts.
They were all excited and extremely proud. The finished quilts were then
donated to the Quilts of Valor program and delivered by Dot Collins.
On April 22nd there was a wonderful article in the Beaumont Enterprise about
the workshop and the quilts the boys made.
At this time we have seven quilts in storage and will expect that sometime in
February we will get a call to deliver more quilts to new boys. The
director has said they usually get several new ones around the first of the
year.
